Disappearing data

Post by Léon »

More and more often, data suddenly disappear from documents: words or numbers disappear or data are copied from one tab to another tab, overwriting data.

I know that this is the free version, but nevertheless I don't find this acceptable.

In the example the solution is easy, but very often it is not at all.

Are you using any cloud storage for these files?

This can only happen if there is any file handling related operating system corruption, otherwise FreeOffice never edit any of the document itself.

Yes, all my daily documents are in pCloud.

Thank you for this reply!

I have the impression that unwanted changes are made when a document is left open for some time. So now I try to close documents immediately after use.

Sorry that I accused PlanMaker of this.

In fact I am happy that PlanMaker is not the cause, because basically I am very, very content with this office program.

I often recommend it to other people.

Response pCloud Team:

"Thank you for contacting pCloud support team.

There is no risk of documents being compromised in pCloud when they are open. You can leave your documents open for as long as you like without affecting the integrity of the files.

However, if you edit the file while it's open-especially through synced folders or third-party apps-then changes might sync and affect the version stored in the cloud
".

It's not PlanMaker's fault and it's not pCloud's fault.

So why am I losing data in documents?

Dear SuperTech,

All these documents accompany my daily life. I open and close most of them every day.

When you close a document, the question always comes whether you want to save the changes. Of course, I always save the changes.

So I wonder if your advice is meant to be serious.

Thank you for your diligence in saving files regularly—this is indeed a best practice we always recommend.

Regarding the data loss you experienced, this doesn't appear to be caused by FreeOffice. To help verify:
  • Save your documents to a local drive (rather than cloud/network locations)
  • Test if the issue persists

Maybe I should reverse the copy direction.

I would then edit the documents on the SSD. Indeed, I think the chances of ‘corruption’ would then be zero.

Then I could/should copy them to the pCloud drive every evening. Just in case my Windows disappears. (Two years ago, I lifted my computer while it was on: everything gone).

Until now, I copy the important documents from the pCloud drive to the SSD every Saturday, as a kind of extra backup.

So that could be done the other way round. (More effort!).

pCloud can be configured to handle this for you automatically.

Hello woody44,

This is exactly the thought I got up with today: I need to handle pCloud differently.

Thanks for your link. I haven't checked it out yet, but (of course) I will soon.

It's definitely PlanMaker:

When I select a row in a document (click on the row number), data in the row disappear after 15 minutes or so if the document remains open.

My cloud service is not running.

Please let us know the file's location.

If you can reproduce the issue, please provide a screen recording and the affected file so we can review it promptly.

My message on September 6, 2025, 7:23 pm was born out of enthusiasm about finally thinking I had found the culprit. For a long time, I had been turning off the cloud service whenever I was working on documents.

I already explained the situation in the opening post. There's nothing new to reproduce.

The worst thing is when data are copied from one tab to another tab, overwriting data. I still try to prevent this by immediately closing and saving every document. And that helps, of course.

But: I'm not so strict with one document. That's “Keukenkastje” (“Kitchen cupboard”), the one in the picture in the opening post. I often look in it for available food when I'm about to eat, and then I forget that the document is open. See the image in the opening post. That‘s the same document where it happened this time.

In any case, disappearing data are not caused by the cloud service.

The location of the document is C:>Username>Dagelijks. Dagelijks=Daily.

Thank you for providing these details, but these random actions can't be performed by FreeOffice itself.

What you're describing is highly unusual. FreeOffice, as a software application, cannot modify data autonomously without a specific user command or external trigger. This suggests the problem may be caused by an external factor.

To help us diagnose the cause, we recommend the following steps:

1. Test in a Clean Environment: Please try to reproduce the issue while running Windows in Safe Mode. This will disable most third-party applications and help determine if another program is interfering.

2. Check for Background Software: Do you have any macro automation, clipboard managers, or other utilities running that might interact with your open documents?

3. Perform a Clean Reinstall: Please completely uninstall FreeOffice, then download and install the latest fresh copy from our website. This will help rule out any potential file corruption.

We take stability very seriously. By working through these steps, we can isolate the cause.

No, Sir,

At this moment the problem is not big enough to perform these steps.

I already explained how I manage the situation.

I can tell you I use no background software, macro automation, clipboard managers, or other utilities running that might interact with my open documents.

It's typical for a computer (or smartphone) that you mostly don't know the cause of strange behaviour.
