I have been using FreeOffice for years without any problems on Windows and recently on Chrome OS Flex.
However, I recently started trying to use it on Linux Mint 22, where I have tried all possible installation methods (repository and manual) exactly as indicated on the site.
I also tried using a deb file, but that gave me the same problem.
So when I want to open an existing file, I get the message “open as read-only.”
This may have something to do with “permissions,” but I'm not an expert, so
I would appreciate some help, please... Thx
Files can only be opened in “read-only” mode !!
Re: Files can only be opened in “read-only” mode !!
Small update regarding my above post.
The read-only files are stored on Google Drive in Explorer (Linux files).
When I copy these same files to the Documents folder, they open normally.
So it may have something to do with where they are stored!

Re: Files can only be opened in “read-only” mode !!
Currently, working with the GNOME system file dialog/manager and making changes to files located on your Google Drive account (linked through System Settings > Online Accounts) is not possible.
You will have to first download the file locally and then re-upload it to Google Drive after making changes.
I have forwarded the issue to our product management team.

Thanks.
I had already discovered this myself.
However, it seems to work with LibreOffice (but that comes pre-installed with Linux).
Thx

This is an English forum, please make your posts in English. I translated the previous post for you.
Re: Files can only be opened in “read-only” mode !!
Good afternoon,
To add to this post:
I have now done a test with another OS, namely FyseOS. I will provide the link.
I installed Free Office 2024 via the deb file ( softmaker-freeoffice-2024_1230-01_amd64.deb )
and it is working as it should for now. Perhaps this has to do with the fact that this OS is compatible with Android.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
So what I wanted to say is that the Excel files in my Google Drive open and I can edit them and save them directly back to Google Drive.
Thx
PS: The only thing that doesn't work is creating a backup file (BAK), which results in an error message.
But if I disable this in ‘Configuration’ (i.e. don't create a backup), it works normally.

We have already forwarded the details of this issue to our development team, but we haven't received an update yet.raitis.veksejs wrote: Sun Dec 21, 2025 4:36 pm I have forwarded the issue to our product management team.
In the meantime, to continue working without interruption, please try copying the files to a local drive (such as your desktop or documents folder) and work on them from there. We're currently investigating a problem with Google Drive integration.
